Balancing work and rest as an entrepreneur

Balancing work and rest as an entrepreneur

By 3pm Thursday I was DONE. Completely dried up of creativity. All my pep had been gifted to my clients and folks I’ve been sharing my knowledge with.

These past 2 weeks have been a lot! I did live TV, for crying out loud!

Here’s the fun list of things I’ve been up to in my business the past 14 days:

📺 Live TV on GB News talking about how we can Have It All (fast forward to 1 hour 34 minutes if you want to see me!)

📹 I did Dani Wallace’s The Show Up, Wise Up, Rise Up Show (watch our chat here).

🎙️I was interviewed about being an entrepreneur on the Fabulous & Female podcast (out soon).

👩‍🏫I gave a live training on how to generate leads with email marketing at the Affinity Women’s Networking Summit.

👩‍🏫I did an email marketing training in Gemma Went’s Elevate Collective.

🎙️I was interviewed about Mindset for success on the Women In Agencies podcast (listen here: Positive Mindset And Increasing Motivation).

🥂I went to Lisa Johnson’s book launch in London.

Meeting my mentor, Lisa Johnson at her book launch party in London.

👩‍💻I supported my clients with their positive mindset, marketing strategies and copywriting queries.

👩‍🏫I ran our monthly copyediting call inside Electric Email.

👩‍🏫I took my Generator group through their quarterly planning.

All this in just 2 weeks! No wonder I was cooked by 3 o'clock Thursday.

Of course, by 3pm I wasn’t actually done because it was time for the school run. Then the real work starts!

How I manage home life, work and rest as a business owner

I confess I had to multitask and fire off some emails whilst Penny sat at the table with me doing a unicorn sticker mosaic.

Here’s the not-so-fun-list of stuff I did after 3pm:

  • Make Penny’s dinner.

  • Fold the dry laundry and put another load in the wash. Put the clean stuff away.

  • Order the cat’s medication.

  • Order my new contact lens prescription.

  • Contemplate doing the online grocery shop - shut laptop and resign to the fact I will go in person to the shop on Saturday.

  • Bath time for Penny. Dry her hair. Put her to bed.

  • Make dinner for the grown ups. Sit down at last to watch Down To Earth with Zac Efron.

And all of a sudden it was Friday - the end of another busy week!

I wanted to blog about this experience partly so I have an excuse to write all this stuff down and reflect. It’s a mega long list for just 2 weeks at work and I’m really proud of how much I’ve put myself out there.

I keep banging on to you about my 20 hour week and I’m happy to report that even with all this profile-raising activity over an intense 2 week period, I still averaged a 20 hour work week.

I didn’t count the book launch in London as “work”, because really it was for fun and to meet some of my new mastermind pals inside Lisa’s Destination Inspiration.

Despite feeling frazzled at the end of Thursday, I felt great the next day! Because I have strict boundaries with work and commitments to my health and wellness.

I know how to balance being busy as an entrepreneur with restoration

Over the past 2 weeks of craziness, I’ve kept myself feeling healthy by:

  • Going to the gym and sauna

  • Getting to bed by 10pm most nights (except Lisa’s book launch - oh hello, 1am)

  • Journaling in bed to get all my thoughts out on paper so I sleep well

  • Practising gratitude for all the wonderful things in my life

  • Shutting down the laptop after making sure anything left on my ‘to do’ list has its place in my calendar so I’m not mentally working on it all evening

11.20pm on the train home from Lisa Johnson’s book launch - I’m usually asleep by now!

I’ll leave you with the takeaway that it’s OK to go all in with your business. To get the best results, it’s essential you create time and space to restore yourself.
